How Jimmy John's Got Started
After Jimmy John Liautaud graduated second to last in his class at Elgin Academy in 1982, his father gave him the choice to either join the army or start a new business. Jimmy chose to start a new business - a hot dog stand. His father lent him $25,000 to get started, but Jimmy quickly realized that it would cost more than that to purchase the equipment needed for a hot dog stand. He quickly switched to a sandwich shop. The $25,000 was spent on rent and security deposit, along with used equipment - a refrigerator, freezer, oven, and a meat slicer.

The store actually made a profit in its first year of business (very few restaurants are able to do this), despite a poor location.
This was because of Jimmy's willingness to deliver sandwiches to local universities, dorms, and people's homes. Jimmy John also handed out free samples of sandwiches to drum up business and help with marketing.

In April 1985, Liautaud bought out his father's interest in the business, becoming the sole owner. In 1986, he opened his second store in Macomb, Illinois, and in 1987, he opened a third in Champaign, Illinois.

Jimmy John continued opening more stores and developed a prototype before beginning franchising in 1994. Franchising continued until 2002 when Liautaud stopped selling franchises for one year to give support to stores that were struggling. As of March 2017, Jimmy John's has almost 3,000 stores with plans for expansion up to 5,000 and beyond.
